Check out the Coolest Treadmill Gadgets for 2009

Seems like everything from TVs to toaster ovens are getting outfitted with the latest gadgetry in 2009. And the treadmill world is no exception. Features like power incline and built-in workout programs have become the rule rather than the exception. Leading the way this year are innovations like iPod docks, LCD screens, integrated fans and more. Take a look at the list below for some of the top innovations of 09.

  • Integrated iPod dock and controls – This is hands down one of my favorite features for 09. Treadmills like the Horizon T1201 Treadmill feature an integrated iPod dock right on the console. This convenient function eliminates the need for additional cords and adaptors, while allowing you to control your iPod at the touch of a button on the treadmill console.
  • Extreme Incline – There has been quite a bit of research lately regarding treadmill incline and its effect on calories burned during a typical workout. We’ve touched on this topic in a previous article: “Use the Incline on your Treadmill Workouts” Studies have shown you can burn up to 5x the calories by increasing your treadmill incline to a 40% grade. Unfortunately, most treadmills have a max incline of 10-15%. Hence the introduction of Incline Trainers like the NordicTrack Incline Trainer X3. The incline is adjustable from 0-40% in .5% increments for an extreme calorie burning workout.
  • Message Board Technology – This is a feature developed by Sole Fitness and available on models like the Sole F85 Treadmill. Essentially, the treadmill is capable of receiving and displaying workout instructions and tips via an alphanumeric text center on the console. The message board also provides a summary of your workout at its conclusion so you can accurately track your progress.
  • Flat Panel Televisions – This isn’t a new feature, but it’s becoming increasingly popular in 2009. Treadmills like the HealthRider Club Series H140t come standard with built-in flat screen televisions featuring digital tuners and cable or satellite compatibility.
