If you want to get the most out of your treadmill workout, it is a good idea for you to invest in a quality heart rate monitor. This way, you can better determine whether or not you are reaching your target heart rate during your workout so you can be certain you are giving your heart and lungs the best workout possible.
Types of Heart Rate Monitors
When it comes to heart rate monitors used with treadmills, there are two basic types to select from. Many treadmills come equipped with a hand monitor, which you grab hold of in order to read your pulse. Unfortunately, these monitors are only about 80% accurate and can yield wild readings if your hands are cold. In addition, they cannot provide you with a continual reading of your heart rate.
For a more accurate reading of your heart rate, you should use chest strap monitor. These monitors are designed to fit closely against your chest in the area that is just below your breasts. In this way, the monitor is able to detect your heart rate through your heart’s electrical activity and to display the information on the treadmill so you can keep track of your progress.
An excellent option that works on many ProForm treadmills is the ProForm AccuRate™ Wireless Heart Rate Monitor. The ProForm AccuRate provides fast, accurate pulse readings and sends heart rate info right to your treadmill’s console.
Heart Rate Monitor Features
The most basic heart monitors will provide you with your heart rate reading, but it is possible to purchase monitors that provide more information. Or, your treadmill may work in conjunction with your heart rate monitor in order to provide you with more in depth information. For example, you may be able to set a target heart rate on your treadmill so it will notify you when your heart rate is too far below or above the rate you have established. You may also be able to get a reading regarding your average heart rate once your workout is complete.

Are the grip style heart rate monitors on treadmills even accurate? I’ve tried a couple at Sears and they don’t seem legit. Wondering if I should go with a chest strap like the one in the pic instead. Thx, Clay
