If you are looking for a way to get a more intense workout or to simply take your treadmill workout to the next level, you may want to consider adding dumbbell intervals to your workout.

Improving Strength While Increasing Cardio Endurance

By adding dumbbell intervals to your treadmill routine, you can help improve your overall strength while also increasing the intensity of your workout. As a result, you will be able to further increase your cardio endurance and reach your target heart rate. This will help you get more out of your workout in a shorter period of time.

Getting Started with Dumbbell Interval Training

In order to get started with dumbbell interval training, you first need to set some dumbbells next to your treadmill. The dumbbells should weigh anywhere from 5 to 12 pounds depending upon your strength. Then, get on the treadmill and start walking at a brisk pace so you can get your body warmed up. Do this for five minutes, making certain to swing your arms as you walk in order to get the blood flowing and to help get them loosened up.

Adding the Dumbbells to Your Workout

Once you have completed your warm up, you can add dumbbells to the routine. To do this, simply hold a dumbbell in each hand while you walk. You might also want to increase the incline of the treadmill in order to increase the overall intensity of the workout. Select a speed that is comfortable for you and try to walk for at least 5 minutes.

Cooling Down

After you have completed your 10 minute walk, you should walk another 5 minutes in order to allow your body to cool down. Reset the incline to zero and put the weights down for this part of the workout. Then, spend a few minutes stretching out your legs afterward in order to avoid cramping.
